Weekly Report | Work x Fun (Vol. 3)

It is week 3 of teaching (and *cough* traveling)! Yes, of course! One of the perks of doing an internship or volunteer abroad is you get a chance to explore around! If you’re learning another language, a program like this would be a good immersion too! Well, at least now I know how to order spicy chicken with a cup of winter melon tea.

(Night Market, Taichung)

(Rainbow Village, Taichung)

As much as I love it here though, sometimes doing everything by myself could be hard. Some days, things went smooth as planned, some days it simply didn’t. Kids fighting, giving you blank stares when they do not understand or forgetting the new words they learned. But they are kids! They need time to learn and grow as an individual. As I watch they make their steps while doing my trial and error, I found myself learning much more from them than they would from me. They have different needs, characteristics, and paces. Kids are special in their own way. From that perspective, I always wonder if the typical ‘listen to me, here’s what you need to know’ education will ever work out. As far as I am concerned, schools are not meant to raise robots that only copy instructions. These kids have great potentials, and becoming ‘robots’ should not be one of them. I mean, a kid drew me a Loch Ness monster when I asked them what their favorite animals were! Isn’t that simply amazing?

(AIESEC EPs)

Apart from the work itself, AIESEC program also allows me to meet people from different countries who come to Taiwan for similar volunteer works. This personally have helped me to discuss about the teaching, share stories and (not to forget) to have fun *yay*.

Lesson learned from week 3: Have fun with the kids at work, have more fun during weekends.
